Get Started with Custom Fields - Transport

🔔 Note: this article is part of the CartonCloud Academy - TMS Basic Setup Trail. Please ensure you have read Learn about Customers - Transport first. 🎓

What are Custom Fields?

Custom Fields allow you to record specific information against different records within CartonCloud. For example, you may want to record the Container Number against a Purchase Order or the delivery site opening hours against an address record. With CartonCloud’s Custom Fields, you are able to ensure all necessary data is recorded and available to the relevant users when required.

For example, Nick needs to record certain information against each Consignment (transport job), such as the service type, vehicle type and pallet type. He also wants the opening hours of the delivery address to be visible against the Consignment. In addition, for the jobs that Coffee Distribution and Warehousing don’t deliver and outsource to a third-party carrier, he wants to be able to record the price the carrier is charging against the job but doesn’t want the customer to be able to see the field. Nick would also like to record what driver accreditations each driver holds against the Driver in CartonCloud. These requirements that Nick has are all possible with Custom Fields!

You can create Custom Fields for

  • Address
  • Shipment
  • Container
  • Consignment Data
  • Consignment Item
  • Vehicle
  • Customer
  • Driver
  • Sale Order
  • Purchase Order
  • Transport Product

Examples of what you could use Custom Fields for (transport-specific)

Driver Custom Fields:

  • Dangerous Goods License
  • Fatigue Accreditation
  • Truck Safe Medical

Consignment Data Custom Fields:

  • Vehicle Type (e.g. Tonne Truck, 4 Tonne, 6 Tonne, Semi etc.)
  • Freight Type (e.g. Chiller, Frozen, Dry)
  • Additional Reference (e.g. customer order number - the receiver's reference)
  • Service Type (e.g. express)
  • Pallet Type (e.g CHEP or Loscam)
  • Dangerous Goods Type

Address Custom Fields:

  • Opening Time
  • Closing Time

Custom Fields can be made visible on the mobile app to make it easier for drivers to access key information such as the delivery locations opening hours. In addition, you can also choose to make the Custom Field not visible to the customer. This is great news for Nick from Coffee Distribution and Warehousing, as he can choose to hide the custom field containing the carrier's charges from his customers as this is sensitive information.

Watch the video below to find out how one of our customers uses custom fields to optimise their operations.

Now that you know what a Custom Field is, it is time to have a go at creating one! Follow along with Vincent, as he shows you how to create a Custom Field.
